Kansas, dans les années 30, Moses Pray, escroc à la petite semaine, assiste à l’enterrement d’une ex-maîtresse et accepte d’emmener sa prétendue fille de 9 ans, Addie, chez une tante. Pendant leur trajet, leurs rapports sont tendus. L’orpheline est persuadée que celui-ci est son père, en raison de la ressemblance de leur menton mais Moses refuse d’endosser ce rôle. Étonnamment mûre pour son âge, la petite Addie s’avère être une coéquipière très efficace : c’est le début de leur épopée.
