Le Poids de l'eau (2001)
À bord d'un voilier, la photographe Jean Janes débarque sur la petite île de Smuttynose, située au large des côtes du New Hampshire, pour enquêter sur un double meurtre vieux d'un siècle. En se plongeant dans les détails de l'affaire, Jean revit la tragédie qui a eu lieu par une nuit de 1873 : comment deux jeunes immigrées norvégiennes, Anethe et Karen, furent assassinées à coups de hache, tandis qu'une troisième, Maren Hontvedt, trouva refuge dans une grotte.Au fil de ses recherches, Jean découvre des analogies entre sa propre vie et celle de la seule rescapée du carnage. Elle y trouve un écho à ses propres doutes, à ses propres interrogations sur l'avenir de son couple. Parallèlement, la suspicion d'une liaison éventuelle entre son mari Thomas, un célèbre poète, et la compagne de son frère Rich, la séduisante Adaline, se transforme lentement en jalousie et méfiance.
