Le Docteur, Jamie et Zoe arrivent sur une planète inconnue. Au début, ils se croient en pleine Première Guerre mondiale, mais ils réalisent qu'il s'agit d'une des nombreuses zones de guerre supervisées par les Seigneurs de guerre, qui ont kidnappé un grand nombre de soldats humains pour former la plus grande armée que l'univers ait jamais connue. À la tête de ce complot se trouve le Chef de guerre, un autre Seigneur du Temps renégat comme le Docteur. Ils réalisent alors que le Docteur ne peut pas résoudre ce problème seul et que ses jours d'errance sont peut-être terminés...
