Furie (1936)
Joe Wilson va rejoindre sa fiancée, Katherine, mais il est arrêté car on le prend par erreur pour un criminel qui a kidnappé un enfant et exigé une rançon. Il est incarcéré, certaines coïncidences suffisant à établir sa culpabilité : il détient, par exemple, un billet qui faisait partie de la rançon versée. La nouvelle se propage rapidement, et les gens s'assemblent autour de la prison pour glaner des informations. Le shérif les disperse, mais la colère monte dans la foule. Il demande alors au gouverneur de faire envoyer la garde nationale pour prévenir un éventuel lynchage. Cependant, l'adjoint du shérif révèle aux meneurs l'indice qui a permis d'inculper le suspect…
