Jerry Warriner et sa femme Lucy se mentent depuis longtemps sans en être dupes. Ils décident donc, d'un commun accord, de divorcer. Ils s'engagent tous les deux dans d'autres relations : Lucy avec un riche mais ennuyeux homme d'affaires d'Oklahoma qui voyage avec sa mère, Jerry avec Barbara Valance, une jeune héritière. Chacun fait de son mieux pour que les plans de l'autre échouent...
