Un jeune élève nommé Custer se distingue par son talent et son insubordination dans le camp militaire de West Point. Durant la guerre de Sécession, la bataille d'Hanovre est remportée, bien que soldée par un véritable massacre. Il est envoyé par ses supérieurs dans le Dakota, à Fort Lincoln.
