Errol Leslie Thomson Flynn (20 juin 1909 - 14 octobre 1959) était un acteur et scénariste australo-américain. Il est surtout connu pour ses rôles de héros romantique charismatique dans les huit films qu'il a tournés avec Olivia de Havilland. Son rôle le plus emblématique reste celui de Robin des Bois dans « Les Aventures de Robin des Bois » (1938). Après avoir signé avec Warner Bros. Pictures en janvier 1935, Flynn accède rapidement à la célébrité. Le studio prend le risque de confier le rôle principal de « Capitaine Blood » (1935) à ce jeune homme de 26 ans alors inconnu. Ce film fait de Flynn une star hollywoodienne majeure et le successeur naturel de Douglas Fairbanks. Ce succès retentissant est suivi par « La Charge de la Brigade légère » (1936) et « Les Aventures de Robin des Bois » (1938), le film le plus cher jamais produit par Warner Bros. à cette époque. Malgré son accent australien, Flynn a brillé dans les westerns à succès « Dodge City » (1939), « Virginia City » (1940), « Santa Fe Trail » (1940) et « They Died with Their Boots On » (1941). La popularité de ces westerns a contribué au renouveau du genre. Fin 1942, Flynn fut accusé de viol sur deux jeunes filles de 17 ans. Malgré son acquittement, la couverture médiatique du procès a popularisé l'expression « In like Flynn ». Avec l'entrée en guerre des États-Unis, Flynn tenta de s'enrôler, mais fut déclaré inapte au service militaire (catégorie 4-F) en raison d'une hypertrophie cardiaque, d'une tuberculose pulmonaire latente et de crises de paludisme récurrentes (contractées en Nouvelle-Guinée). Pendant la guerre, il tourna plusieurs films avec le réalisateur Raoul Walsh. Parmi ses films figurent « Gentleman Jim » (1942), l'un des rôles préférés de Flynn, et des films de guerre tels que « Desperate Journey » (1942) et « Objectif Birmanie ! » (1945). Amer de son image publique de coureur de jupons et de son incapacité à servir pendant la guerre, Flynn sombra dans la toxicomanie et l'alcoolisme. Son déclin progressif se traduisit par le succès déclinant de ses films et par un physique marqué par le vieillissement. À la fin des années 1950, Flynn fit son retour avec ses prestations dans « Le Soleil se lève aussi » (1957), « Trop, trop tôt » (1958) et « Les Racines du ciel » (1958). En 1959, il mourut d'une crise cardiaque à Vancouver, au Canada. Son autobiographie controversée, « Mes voies perverses » (1959), fut publiée à titre posthume. Il a également écrit deux romans : « Beam Ends » (1937) et « Showdown » (1946).
