Les Cévennes, au XVIe siècle. Alors qu'il revient chez lui, Michael Kohlhaas se heurte à un baron, qui a décidé d'installer un péage. Sans argent, le marchand laisse en gage ses chevaux et un valet. Ne parvenant pas à récupérer son bien, Kohlhaas veut plaider sa cause en justice mais il est débouté...
