L'Impasse tragique (1946)
Bradford Galt est un détective privé flirtant avec sa fidèle secrétaire Kathleen. Un jour, il est pris en filature par un homme au complet blanc peu discret. Galt intercepte l’homme et lui fait avouer le nom de son commanditaire qui n’est autre que Tony Jardine, un ancien associé ayant trahi Galt dans le passé. Jardine est un avocat véreux qui extorque de l’argent à des femmes fortunées. Il fréquente notamment la belle Mari, femme de son ami Hardy Cathcart, le raffiné propriétaire d’une galerie d’art. Lorsque Galt s’en va à la rencontre de Jardine pour avoir des explications sur sa filature, il ne se doute pas qu’il est en fait l’objet d’une sombre machination. Heureusement pour lui, sa secrétaire veille à ce rien ne lui arrive…
