Dévasté par la mort de sa mère et délaissé par son père dès son plus jeune âge, James Dean déménage dans l'Indiana pour y vivre auprès de sa tante. Tout en essayant de surmonter ces difficiles épreuves, ce dernier se sert de sa passion pour l'art et les voitures de course comme d'un exutoire pour ses conflits intérieurs. Après son baccalauréat reçu avec mention, James Dean, contre l'avis de son père, arrête ses études de commerce pour apprendre à jouer la comédie. Se servant de son passé tragique comme source d'inspiration, il subjugue aussi bien les réalisateurs que le public et acquiert rapidement une notoriété à New York et Hollywood.
