Au début de la Seconde Guerre Mondiale, un Allemand très attaché à son pays, du nom de Josef Steiner, ne peut accepter le régime nazi. Il délaisse sa femme et commence un long et douloureux pèlerinage à travers l'Europe, pour fuir la persécution. En cours de route, il se lie d'amitié avec un jeune refugié de 19 ans. Mais dès qu'il apprend que sa femme est tombée malade, Steiner est prêt à sacrifier sa liberté pour aller la retrouver.
