Glenn Ford, de son vrai nom Gwyllyn Samuel Newton Ford, est né au Quebec. Il débute sur la scène de l'école de Santa Monica, et il enchaîne alors avec des tournées sur la côte Ouest. En 1939, il est repéré par un découvreur de talents, il fait ses premiers pas au cinéma, dans Heaven with a Barbed Wire Fence pour la Fox, mais signe parallèlement un contrat avec la Columbia, avec qui il restera plus de 14 ans. Avec son physique de jeune premier, il tourne des films de série B dont deux westerns : Texas de George Marshall en 1941, et The Desperadoes de Charles Vidor en 1943. Il est alors catalogué comme acteur de films d'action. Son engagement dans la Marine, en 1943, l'oblige à mettre sa carrière entre parenthèses. Il est envoyé en France pendant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale où il aide à construire des abris pour les populations. A son retour, en 1946, il tourne dans un classique du film noir qui le propulse au sommet: Gilda de Charles Vidor où il joue le rôle de Johnny Farell, l'aventurier amoureux de la belle Rita Hayworth. Par la suite il jouera dans un autre film noir culte : Règlement de comptes de Fritz Lang. Bien que spécialiste du western (plus de la moitié de sa filmographie), il tourne aussi bien des films policiers - Allo brigade speciale de Blake Edwards en 1962, que des drames - Le Souffle de la violence de Rudolph Maté en 1955, des comédies - Il faut marier papa de Vincente Minnelli en 1963 ou des films d'aventure Les Revoltes de la Claire-Louise de Jacques Tourneur en 1953. Dans les années 70, Glenn Ford débute à la télévision dans le controversé Brotherhood of the Bell et apparait plus tard dans des séries populaires telles que: Sam Cade et The Family Holvak, dans lesquels il tient la vedette. De 80 à 90, Ford n'apparaît plus que dans quelques documentaires, et quelques films. Il joue par exemple un second rôle dans Superman I (1978) en interprétant le père de Clark Kent. Témoin privilégié de l'âge d'or d'Hollywood, il est souvent sollicité pour participer à des documentaires retraçant l'histoire de cette période. En 1970, Ford publie son autobiographie, Glenn Ford, RFD Beverly Hills.
