En 1947 un jeune couple d'Americains, Port Moresby et Kit, partent pour l'Afrique à la recherche de leur amour que la civilisation d'après-guerre perturbe. Pour Bertolucci le livre de Bowles "raconte une belle histoire d'amour, une histoire d'amour banale entre deux personnes très compliquées qui s'adorent mais ne peuvent pas trouver le bonheur ensemble".
