Enfant, Holly Grant avait demandé au Père Noël qu'il lui apporte un fiancé. Seulement, la jeune fille a attendu en vain de longues années sans trouver l'homme qui lui convient. Devenue assistante sociale, elle se bat pour obtenir des subventions et pour convaincre des avocats de défendre les familles défavorisées dont elle s'occupe. La veille de Noël, Holly, malgré tous ses efforts, échoue à réunir une mère et ses enfants. Elle décide de se plaindre à l'avocat responsable de son échec, Ryan Hughes. Une ruse du Père Noël va le placer sur le chemin de la jeune femme...
