Alors qu'un virus lié aux moustiques décime la population, un prisonnier condamné à mort, Ray Erikson, bénéficie d'un sursis en participant à une expérience scientifique liée à l'ADN des moustiques. A son arrivée au centre expérimental, le prisonnier échappe à la vigilance des gardiens et se réfugie dans le laboratoire avec le Docteur Jennifer Allen comme otage. Une fusillade provoque alors l'explosion de l'accélérateur de particule du laboratoire, projetant une grande quantité de vaccin génétiquement modifié sur le criminel et son otage. Erikson parvient à s'échapper, mais, gravement contaminé, il va alors subir une terrible mutation... Responsable de son arrestation, le lieutenant Tom Randall va suivre les traces de cette créature mutante assoiffée de sang. Compagnon de Jennifer, Tom va également constater les transformations inquiétantes de la scientifique, dont la transformation se fait plus lentement...
