Eve, une femme d’une quarantaine d’années, travaille dans la finance à Chicago et mise tout sur sa vie professionnelle. Quelques jours avant Noël, elle partage un taxi avec Max, un musicien, qu’elle remarque à peine. A la suite d’une chute, elle se retrouve au paradis, où l’ange Pearl l’accueille. La vieille dame la renvoie sur terre pour accomplir une mission : réaliser le vœu de Lauren, la nièce de Max, âgée de 9 ans, qui souhaite voir son oncle à nouveau heureux.
