Un jeune homme, Carrol Jo Hummer, ancien du Vietnam, associé avec son épouse, veut se recycler dans le transport de marchandises, à l'aide d'un camion fraîchement acheté. Refusant d'intégrer la mafieuse engeance des routiers, dirigée par le brutal Josh Cutler qui a soudoyé la police locale, notre bonhomme va se heurter a la violence et à la corruption de la profession...
