Carolyn et Ben Ryan vivent avec leurs deux enfants dans une petite ville paisible des États-Unis. Un soir, leur fils Jacob ne rentre pas à la maison. Leur inquiétude se change en angoisse lorsqu'ils apprennent que le corps sans vie de sa petite amie vient d'être retrouvé. Ben et Carolyn refusent de croire à la culpabilité de leur fils, jusqu'au moment où Ben découvre des preuves accablantes dans le coffre de la voiture de Jacob. Pris de panique, il s'empresse de faire disparaître les terribles indices. Déchirés entre le remords, leurs mensonges et leur volonté de protéger Jacob, les Ryan s'enferment dans le silence. La police continue à enquêter...
