Inspiré d’une histoire vraie. Ernie Pyle, correspondant de guerre, va suivre un groupe de fantassins américains impliqués dans deux moments-clés de la Seconde Guerre mondiale : la campagne d'Afrique du Nord et celle d'Italie. Il va centrer ses articles sur la vie quotidienne de ces soldats, tiraillés entre leur devoir, leurs relations amicales et sentimentales…
