Maurice Schlapkohl, le directeur du Dream Palace, le plus grand cinéma de Budapest, embauche comme ouvreuse Luisa Ginglebusher, une orpheline naïve et fantasque qui a l'habitude de raconter à ses amis l'histoire de La Bonne fée. Au Dream Palace, Luisa fait la rencontre de Detlaff, un serveur de restaurant qui l'invite à une soirée, au cours de laquelle Konrad, le patron d'une société sud-américaine, tente d'obtenir ses faveurs.Devenue la protégée de ce millionnaire entreprenant et désireuse d'accomplir de bonnes actions, Luisa choisit au hasard, dans l'annuaire, un avocat ruiné, Max Sporum, et décide de devenir sa bienfaitrice. Mais rien ne se passe comme prévu...
