En 1941, Bill Kruggs, habitant de Punxatawney en Virginie, est le premier habitant de sa ville à s'enrôler dans l'armée américaine après les attaques de Pearl Harbor. Encouragé par ses paires et ses parents, le jeune homme est envoyé au camp d'entraînement de Fort Wayne, dans le Missouri. Mais bien vite on lui annonce qu'il est affecté à l'instruction dans un camp de sa ville alors que tous les autres sont envoyés en Europe. Bill devient alors la cible des plaisantins jusqu'au jour où il doit remplacer un pilote malade…
