Liz Murray est une jeune adolescente élevée dans la pauvreté par des parents toxicomanes. Sa mère, atteinte du sida, va trouver la mort. Pourtant, la jeune fille dispose de capacités étonnantes. Néanmoins, ni l'institutrice ni les services sociaux ne parviennent à la convaincre de prendre soin d'elle et d'aller à l'école régulièrement. À 15 ans, Liz est sans abri et erre dans les rues de New York.
