Venu tourner un film à Cineccitta, Peter Elliot, star du cinéma américain, s'éprend de sa jeune partenaire française, Jane Steiner. Il est marié et père de deux enfants, et leur liaison enflammée perturbe le tournage et remet en cause toutes leurs certitudes à l'écran et dans la vie.
