À l'occasion des quarante ans de l'arrivée de François Mitterrand au pouvoir en mai 1981, retour sur les rapports qui liaient le Président et les artistes, entre admiration et manipulation. Cet anniversaire est l'occasion de redécouvrir les grandes réalisations qui portent son empreinte et incarnent la gauche au pouvoir, mais aussi de dévoiler la relation profonde que le président socialiste entretenait avec l'art et la culture, Ses plus proches collaborateurs, ses ministres, ses amis de toujours et sa fille, Mazarine Pingeot, dressent, aux côtés de Léa Salamé, un portrait inédit du dernier Florentin de la République.
