Le Châtiment (1939)
Madge Stone est heureuse. Fred Burke, son fiancé, lui annonce qu'il a décroché une promotion et une augmentation qui vont hâter leur mariage et leur installation à Boston. Madge n'a qu'un seul souci, Johnnie, son jeune frère, qu'elle a élevée et dont les sorties nocturnes l'inquiètent. Johnnie la rabroue et le soir même commet son premier hold-up avec un truand notoire, Frank Wilson, qu'il admire. Tandis que Fred se débrouille pour procurer un job à Johnny, ce dernier vole son revolver et retrouve Wilson. Le braquage tourne mal. Wilson abat le caissier avec l'arme de Fred et parvient à s'enfuir. Arrêtés pour le premier hold-up et incarcérés à Sing Sing, Wilson et Johnny voient arriver un condamné à mort, Fred, accusé du meurtre du caissier...
