Né en Grande-Bretagne, Henry Travers était un acteur chevronné des scènes anglaises avant d'émigrer aux États-Unis en 1917. Il acquit une plus grande expérience théâtrale à Broadway, au sein de la Theatre Guild, et entama sa longue carrière cinématographique avec Reunion in Vienna (1933). Son allure bienveillante et paternelle devint familière aux cinéphiles pendant les 25 années suivantes, notamment dans des films comme High Sierra (1941), où il incarnait l'oncle aimable mais sournoisement perspicace de Joan Leslie, et le généreux M. Bogardus dans The Bells of St. Mary's (1945). Mais c'est son rôle de l'ange quelque peu désorienté Clarence Oddbody, au service de James Stewart, dans le classique It's a Wonderful Life (1946), qui le rendra à jamais célèbre. Après une longue et brillante carrière, il se retira des écrans en 1949 et mourut à Hollywood en 1965.
