Michelle Benti, journaliste à l'Informer, est renvoyée sans préavis par son patron, Harlan Wade, un homme corrompu qui redoute le ton des articles que rédige la jeune femme. Au cours d'une soirée, une violente dispute éclate entre Michelle Benti et Harlan Wade. Lorsque celui-ci est retrouvé mort dans sa piscine, au lendemain de la réception, Michelle est immédiatement accusée du meurtre. Elle contacte Perry Mason et lui demande de l'aider. Perry découvre très rapidement que Wade faisait chanter bon nombre de personnages influents, qui avaient donc tous d'excellentes raisons de vouloir sa mort...
