William Clark Gable (1er février 1901 – 16 novembre 1960) était un acteur américain. En 1999, l'American Film Institute l'a classé septième plus grande star masculine de tous les temps. Son rôle le plus célèbre est celui de Rhett Butler dans le film épique de 1939, Autant en emporte le vent, qui se déroule pendant la guerre de Sécession et dans lequel il partage l'affiche avec Vivien Leigh. Cette performance lui valut sa troisième nomination à l'Oscar du meilleur acteur ; il remporta la statuette pour New York-Miami (1934) et fut également nommé pour Les Révoltés du Bounty (1935). Il joua ensuite dans Run Silent, Run Deep, un film de guerre sous-marine, et dans son dernier film, Les Désaxés (1961), où il donna la réplique à Marilyn Monroe, pour sa dernière apparition à l'écran. Au cours de sa longue carrière cinématographique, Gable a partagé l'affiche avec certaines des actrices les plus populaires de son époque. Joan Crawford, son actrice préférée, a partagé l'affiche avec Gable dans huit films, Myrna Loy à sept reprises, et Jean Harlow dans six. Il a également joué avec Lana Turner dans quatre longs métrages et avec Norma Shearer dans trois. Au milieu des années 30, Gable était souvent considéré comme la plus grande vedette masculine, juste derrière Shirley Temple, l'actrice la plus populaire du box-office.
