Leslie Howard Steiner (3 avril 1893 – 1er juin 1943) était un acteur, réalisateur et producteur anglais. Il a écrit de nombreux articles et nouvelles pour le New York Times, le New Yorker et Vanity Fair, et fut l'une des plus grandes stars du cinéma des années 1930. Actif aussi bien en Grande-Bretagne qu'à Hollywood, Howard interpréta Ashley Wilkes dans Autant en emporte le vent (1939). Il joua dans de nombreux autres films, incarnant souvent l'Anglais typique, notamment Berkeley Square (1933), Servitude humaine (1934), Le Mouron rouge (1934), La Forêt pétrifiée (1936), Pygmalion (1938), Intermezzo (1939), « Pimpernel » Smith (1941) et Les Premiers des rares (1942). Il fut nommé à l'Oscar du meilleur acteur pour Berkeley Square et Pygmalion. Durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Howard s'est illustré comme acteur et réalisateur. Il a contribué à la propagande anti-allemande et au renforcement du soutien aux Alliés. Deux ans après sa mort, le British Film Yearbook qualifiait son travail de « l'un des aspects les plus précieux de la propagande britannique ». Des rumeurs le soupçonnaient d'être lié aux services de renseignement britanniques ou alliés, alimentant des théories du complot concernant sa mort en 1943, lorsque la Luftwaffe abattit le vol 777 de la BOAC au-dessus de l'Atlantique (au large de Cedeira, près de La Corogne), à bord duquel il se trouvait.
