James Byron Dean (8 février 1931 – 30 septembre 1955) était un acteur américain. Il est resté dans les mémoires comme une figure emblématique de la désillusion adolescente et de l'isolement social, comme l'exprime le titre de son film le plus célèbre, La Fureur de vivre (1955), où il incarnait l'adolescent tourmenté Jim Stark. Ses deux autres rôles marquants furent celui du solitaire Cal Trask dans À l'est d'Éden (1955) et celui du garçon de ferme bourru Jett Rink dans Géant (1956). Après sa mort dans un accident de voiture le 30 septembre 1955, Dean devint le premier acteur à recevoir une nomination posthume à l'Oscar du meilleur acteur pour son rôle dans À l'est d'Éden. Une seconde nomination, l'année suivante pour son rôle dans Géant, fit de lui le seul acteur à avoir reçu deux nominations posthumes. En 1999, l'American Film Institute l'a classé 18e meilleur acteur de cinéma masculin de l'âge d'or d'Hollywood dans sa liste « 100 Years...100 Stars ».
