Reconnue pour son travail sur les planches, tant classiques que contemporaines, elle a reçu cinq Tony Awards de la meilleure actrice dans une pièce de théâtre. Harris a fait ses débuts à Broadway en 1945, contre la volonté de sa mère qui souhaitait qu'elle devienne une jeune fille de la haute société. Elle a été acclamée pour son interprétation d'une jeune fille solitaire de 12 ans dans la pièce « The Member of the Wedding » (1950), rôle qu'elle a repris dans le film éponyme de 1952, pour lequel elle a été nommée à l'Oscar de la meilleure actrice. En 1951, elle a démontré toute l'étendue de son talent en incarnant Sally Bowles dans la production originale de « I Am a Camera », rôle pour lequel elle a remporté son premier Tony Award. Elle a ensuite joué dans l'adaptation cinématographique de 1955. Julie Harris a livré des performances remarquées dans des films tels que « La Maison du diable » (1963) et « Reflets dans un œil d'or » (1967), où elle donnait la réplique à Marlon Brando. Actrice adepte de la méthode Stanislavski, elle a remporté des Tony Awards pour « The Lark » (1956), « Forty Carats » (1969), « The Last of Mrs. Lincoln » (1973) et « The Belle of Amherst » (1977). Elle a également reçu un Grammy Award et trois Emmy Awards. Julie Harris a été intronisée au American Theatre Hall of Fame en 1979, a reçu la Médaille nationale des arts en 1994[1] et un Tony Award spécial pour l'ensemble de sa carrière en 2002.
