23 novembre 1887 (Camberwell, Londres, Royaume-Uni) – 2 février 1969 (Midhurst, West Sussex, Royaume-Uni) Boris Karloff (de son vrai nom William Henry Pratt), figure emblématique du cinéma d'horreur en noir et blanc, naquit en Angleterre d'un père diplomate, mais n'avait aucune envie de suivre les traces de son père. Il émigra au Canada et parcourut l'Amérique du Nord avec de petites troupes de théâtre. Il fit ses débuts au cinéma en 1916 dans « La Muette de Portici », avec Anna Pavlova. À partir de 1919, il apparut régulièrement dans des seconds rôles, mais c'est son interprétation du Monstre dans « Frankenstein » de James Whale qui lui apporta la célébrité. Bela Lugosi avait refusé le rôle, craignant d'être « perdu » sous un maquillage trop chargé. Mais aucun maquillage ne put masquer la performance dramatique magistrale de Karloff. L'acteur reprit ensuite le rôle qui l'avait rendu célèbre : La Fiancée de Frankenstein (1935), Le Fils de Frankenstein (1939) et Frankenstein 1970 (1958). Les années 1930 furent l'âge d'or de sa carrière. Il tint le rôle principal dans les films d'horreur rétro acclamés La Momie (1932) et Le Masque de Fu Manchu (1932), et collabora avec son « ami-ennemi » Bela Lugosi dans Le Chat noir (1934), Le Corbeau (1935) et Le Rayon invisible (1936). La suite de sa carrière fut marquée par des hauts et des bas. Il s'est parfois adonné à des films de série B à petit budget, parodiant ses anciens succès dans le cinéma d'horreur (début des années 1940 et 1950), avant de réapparaître dans des productions à succès du producteur Val Lewton : « L'Invasion des profanateurs de sépultures » (1945), « L'Île des morts » (1945) et « Bedlam » (1946). Dans les années 1960, le prolifique Roger Corman a dirigé ce vétéran du cinéma d'horreur. Par exemple, sur le tournage du thriller confidentiel « The Terror » (1963), deux stars se sont rencontrées : Karloff, alors sur le déclin, et Jack Nicholson, alors en pleine ascension. Le célèbre critique de cinéma Leonard Maltin a qualifié de chant du cygne la prestation de Karloff dans le thriller « Targets » (1968) de Peter Bogdanovich. Au total, il a joué dans plus de deux cents films et séries télévisées (auxquels il a participé activement dans les années 1950 et 1960). Durant les dernières années de sa vie, l'acteur souffrait de problèmes respiratoires et devait souvent utiliser un masque à oxygène sur les plateaux de tournage. Dans la mémoire des fans, il restera à jamais associé à la créature de Frankenstein et à la momie, l'archétype du monstre au cinéma, alors que dans la vie, c'était un véritable gentleman, un homme doux, diplomate et attentionné.
