Née le 15 mars 1953 à Monroe, en Géorgie, Frances Conroy grandit dans une famille qui l'encourage tôt vers les arts de la scène. Elle se forme à la Juilliard School, aux côtés notamment de Robin Williams et Kelsey Grammer, avant de s'imposer durablement sur les planches de Broadway tout au long des années 1980 et 1990. Le théâtre reste longtemps son terrain de prédilection. Elle y accumule distinctions et nominations, dont un Drama Desk Award et une nomination aux Tony Awards en 2000 pour sa performance dans La Descente du mont Morgan d'Arthur Miller. Au cinéma, elle tourne à plusieurs reprises avec Woody Allen : Manhattan (1979), Une autre femme (1988) ou encore Crimes et délits (1989). Mais c'est la télévision qui lui offre la reconnaissance du grand public. Dès 2001, elle incarne Ruth Fisher dans Six Feet Under, matriarche d'une famille de pompes funèbres, rôle pour lequel elle remporte le Golden Globe de la meilleure actrice dans une série dramatique en 2004 ainsi qu'un Screen Actors Guild Award. À partir de 2011, elle rejoint American Horror Story, traversant plusieurs saisons dans des rôles aussi variés qu'inquiétants. On la retrouve aussi au cinéma dans Joker (2019), où elle campe la mère de Joaquin Phoenix.
