A New York, il nevrotico Bob Wiley per le sue manie e fobie ricorre ad un noto psichiatra - il dottor Leo Marvin - il quale lo invita a leggere il suo ultimo libro di grande successo: è intitolato "Passi di bimbo" e, a suo avviso, appunto a piccoli passi Wiley ce la farà a sciogliere i nodi della propria personalità.
