Ritorno dal nulla (1995)
Dal romanzo autobiografico Jim entra nel campo di basket del poeta e musicista Jim Carroll, ma con l'azione trasferita dalla fine degli anni '60 ai '90. L'irrequieto percorso di un adolescente in un istituto cattolico di New York che passa dalle partite di basket all'autodistruttiva discesa nei paradisi artificiali dell'eroina. Una squadra di bravi attori, un DiCaprio convincente (sostituì all'ultimo momento River Phoenix, morto per overdose), una colonna sonora (Graeme Revell) funzionale. Appiattito da una riduzione di taglio sociologico e didattico, il film restituisce soltanto in piccola parte la ricchezza linguistica e l'esuberanza lirica del libro.
