Londra. John Morlar (Richard Burton), noto scrittore, è vittima dell’aggressione di uno sconosciuto. Ridotto in fin di vita, viene ricoverato in ospedale dove i medici notano con sorpresa che l’attività cerebrale continua nonostante il corpo sia in condizione tale che dovrebbe essere morto. Brunel (Lino Ventura), ispettore francese nella capitale britannica per uno scambio “culturale” tra le polizie dei due paesi, si occupa del caso con l’aiuto del sergente Duff (Michael Byrne). Brunel legge il diario di Morlar e chiede aiuto alla psichiatra, la dottoressa Zonfeld (Lee Remick), perché quello che emerge è sconcertante: sembra che Morlar sia in grado di provocare catastrofi con la sola forza di volontà.
