Costa del Maine, estate. Matt Fowler è un medico che opera nella cittadina in cui è nato e cresciuto. Sua moglie Ruth, newyorkese e direttrice di cori è una donna molto cortese ma anche molto rigorosa. Il loro unico figlio, Frank, è tornato a casa dall'università in cui studia Architettura. Ha intrecciato una storia, che lui considera un amore estivo, con Natalie, una donna separata e con figli. Ruth non vede di buon occhio questa relazione e non perde occasione per farlo notare al figlio. L'ex marito di Natalie, Richard non rinuncia a importunarla carico com'è di rancore. Finché un giorno, trovando in casa con lei Frank, uccide il 'rivale' a sangue freddo. Viene arrestato ma liberato dietro cauzione di lì a poco, in attesa del processo. Ruth lo incontra spesso e non sopporta l'idea di vederlo a piede libero.
