Matt Scudder è un ex-poliziotto della squadra narcotici, già alcolizzato ed ora disintossicato dopo una adeguata terapia. Ma ha un complesso di colpa per aver ucciso a suo tempo, quando era in servizio, un piccolo spacciatore di droga. Scudder dichiara guerra a mezzo mondo e fa presto a cacciarsi nei guai sia con Chance, un negro proprietario di un locale dove si trovano squillo di lusso, sia con Angel Maldonato, un losco affarista e trafficante di eroina.
