In una isolata cittadina dell'Alaska improvvisamente Rosy ed altri bambini cominciano ad ammalarsi: una grave epidemia contro la quale mancano le medicine. La scorta piú vicina si trova a mille chilometri di distanza, ed una terribile tempesta di neve rende impraticabile ogni normale via di comunicazione. Unica possibilità è tentare con una squadra di cani da slitta. Parte allora una spedizione con una slitta trainata da cani che però si perde. Sarà Balto, emarginato in quanto mezzo cane e mezzo lupo, a ritrovare la slitta e le medicine.
