Dopo diciotto anni di matrimonio, coronati dalla presenza di due figli, Barbara Rose si accorge che qualcosa non funziona nella sua vita: il marito, Oliver, che pure le ha assicurato un'esistenza di alto livello, non l'ha mai gratificata. Il mondo perfetto che Oliver ha saputo allestire per loro in tutti quegli anni le pare privo di senso e quando la coppia va in crisi gli effetti sono devastanti.
