Max Grabelski, giovanotto cordiale e bonaccione, fattorino a domicilio, deve consegnare un grosso pacco in un giorno e in un orario preciso a un losco affarista, certo Bragdon. Quando arriva all'ora stabilita, nel cuor della notte, trova l'edificio all'indirizzo indicato avvolto nelle fiamme e il destinatario dell'enorme plico forse arso nel rogo. Max dala sorpresa lascia cadere il pacco che si rompe rovesciando sulla strada un fiume di dollari. Preso dal panico, fugge lasciando lì tutta quella fortuna. Casualmente giunto in un campo scout, viene preso per la guida che i ragazzi stavano aspettando.
