Nel penitenziario di Sing Sing nasce un rapporto di umana comprensione tra il direttore e il giovane gangster John, finito nella malavita in seguito a un'infanzia sbandata. Quando la ragazza di John rimane gravemente ferita in un incidente d'auto, il direttore gli accorda un permesso di 24 ore per andare a trovarla. La ragazza è stata insidiata da un amico di John e si è ferita per sfuggirgli: il giovane allora affronta il rivale e nel violento scontro che segue la sua fidanzata spara all'uomo che ha tradito John. Questi si costituisce per non mancare alla parola data al direttore e va sulla sedia elettrica per salvare la ragazza che ama.
