La piccola principessa (1939)
Un ufficiale inglese viene mandato in Sudafrica, dove si sta svolgendo la guerra anglo-boera. L'uomo ha una figlia ancora piccola, Sara, e la lascia in un collegio aristocratico dove la bambina viene bene accolta anche dall'arcigna direttrice. Sara si affeziona subito alla maestra e al suo fidanzato. Il conflitto in Sudafrica sembra andar male per gli inglesi e anche il fidanzato della maestra viene mandato al fronte. Un giorno arriva la notizia che il padre della bambina è disperso e potrebbe essere caduto in battaglia. Poiché la società mineraria di cui il padre era azionista è fallita, Sara non ha più soldi e viene privata della sua bella stanza nel collegio e viene costretta a svolgere umili servigi per pagare il suo mantenimento. La bambina però non si rassegna al fatto che il padre sia morto e spesso scappa dal collegio per andare a cercarlo all'ospedale militare...
