L'uomo che ride (1928)
Londra di fine '700. Un piccolo orfano dal volto sfigurato e dal ghigno perenne, Gwynpaline, vive passando di fiera in fiera insieme al fidato Ursus, a una bambina cieca, Dea, e al cane Homo. La sfortunata compagnia va avanti proponendolo come fenomeno da baraccone finché il ragazzo, cresciuto (Conrad Veidt), non scopre di essere figlio di un aristocratico. Ma in una dura requisitoria contro la nobiltà tenuta alla Camera dei Lord, Gwynpaline rinnega le proprie origini e sceglie di tornare alla sua vita con i fedeli amici di sempre che nel frattempo sono stati messi al bando.
