Hewey Calloway è un maturo cowboy, fiero come le terre da cui proviene. Dopo lunghi vagabondaggi, torna alla fattoria del fratello Walter nelle sterminate campagne del Texas. Fatica ad adattarsi alla vita stanziale, anche perché Walter è molto diverso da lui, abituato com'è ai ritmi della piccola città. Ma quando si tratta di schierarsi contro la prepotenza di un banchiere Hewey trova in Walter un valido alleato; nel contempo il rude cowboy si innamora di una fiera maestrina.
