Ispirato alla storia vera di Jan e Antonina Zabinski, La signora dello zoo di Varsavia è un racconto di eroismo civile in tempo di guerra, e insieme una dichiarazione d'amore per la natura e gli animali. Sul finire del 1939, le truppe naziste bombardano la capitale polacca, riducendo il famoso zoo a un cumulo di macerie. Il direttore della struttura e sua moglie (Jessica Chastain) assistono impotenti all'occupazione del Paese e alla costruzione del ghetto ebraico. Ma con l'inizio delle deportazioni, nel 1942, la coppia si mobilita per nascondere intere famiglie di Ebrei all'interno del giardino zoologico, mascherato da allevamento di maiali. La villa degli Zabinski e le vecchie gabbie ancora intatte diventano un rifugio segreto al riparo dai feroci nazisti. "La casa sotto la folle stella", com'era chiamato lo zoo al tempo del suo massimo splendore, viene ricordata per aver salvato circa trecento Ebrei dal genocidio.
