Nel 1918, nel pieno della Prima guerra mondiale, alcune truppe americane d'assalto (composte per lo più da immigrati o ex galeotti) vengono inviate nella foresta delle Argonne in Francia per un attacco suicida sul fronte occidentale. Dopo l'attacco, un battaglione della 77esima Divisione (composto da poco più di 500 soldati) si ritrova intrappolato oltre le linee nemiche senza cibo, acqua, né munizioni o medicinali con la paura di un assedio tedesco sempre più imminente.
