Maddie Young, sorda e muta dall'età di tredici anni, è una scrittrice di successo che sta cercando di finire il suo nuovo romanzo. Affetta dal blocco dello scrittore, trascorre le sue giornate in una casa isolata, dove interagisce solo con il gatto e la vicina. Poi, una notte, Maddie viene presa di mira da uno psicopatico che, una volta scoperto l'handicap della donna, diventa ancora più crudele. Inizia così una lunga lotta per la sopravvivenza...
