Nic e Jules sono una perfetta coppia lesbica di mezza età. Profondamente innamorate l'una dell'altra, hanno costruito col tempo un sereno ambiente familiare assieme ai due figli adolescenti, Joni e Laser. Quando Joni compie diciotto anni, è il fratello minore a farle pressioni perché si rivolga alla banca del seme e scopra l'identità del donatore segreto con cui condividono il patrimonio genetico. Inizialmente scettica, Joni si mette sulle tracce del padre e scopre che questi è Paul, un dongiovanni che gestisce un ristorante biologico alla periferia di Los Angeles.
