In un programma radiofonico l'argomento della serata è il matricidio, e a spiegare le cause di questo delitto intervengono uno psicologo specializzato e un matricida stesso. Ad ascoltare il programma è Norman Bates, che, preso il dovuto coraggio, alza la cornetta e telefona alla radio, dicendo inizialmentre di chiamarsi Ed. Norman esordisce con una frase piuttosto inquietante: "Ho ucciso e sto per uccidere ancora". Ovviamente alla radio prendono subito sul serio questa minaccia, e cercano di farlo parlare il più possibile, del suo passato, della prima volta che ha ucciso e di come lui abbia ucciso sua madre. L'uomo ripercorre tutte le tappe della sua vita, da quando era bambino, dalla morte del padre, fino all'adolescenza, quando ha cominciato a dare i primi segni di squilibrio.
